In 1912, he moved to Paris and began working for fashion designer Paul Poiret. Erté soon began designing costumes and selling gouache and pen-and-ink fashion illustrations. From 1916-37, he was under contract with Harper’s Bazaar. He also designed many costumes and sets for French theater, working for the Folies-Bergère from 1919-30. Erté’s characteristic style is elongated and linear, depicting figures in lavish clothing and in front of Art Deco backgrounds. He passed away in Paris on April 21, 1990.
