Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, AKA Cheik Nadro, was born in 1923 in Côte d’Ivoire, Africa. He was amongst the first Ivorians to be educated by the French colonial government. His drawings depict many different subjects, mostly drawn from local folklore with some from his own vision. Frédéric is of the Bété origin, a people who have an oral, unwritten language. He invented his alphabet starting from the Bété language. He considered the alphabet to be universal, but named it the “National Ivoryan alphabet”. He today lives in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

TO ME, “ART IS THE MASTERY OF SUBLIME AND INNOCENT WORKS!”

To me, “art” is the mastery of sublime and innocent works! Yes! To me art is “beauty”: it is “the good”: it is “goodness”: it is the gentlest of words stimulating love of life: it is virtue exposed in order to teach it: it is an effective remedy against disease: it is a “signed peace treaty”: it is a beautiful discourse brining mankind together as brothers: it is a melodious song praising sublime innocence: it is a marvelous dance enthralling all eyes; it is the perfect scientific explanation demonstrating to mankind the irrefutable reason for the existence of “God” whose “perfect” and never-ceasing imitation of infinite and dazzling works answers to the name of great civilization: Finally art is the aesthetic Creation of “beautiful and natural forms”, measured, woven, cast, sculpted, forged and arranged, which mankind produces and spreads out in space and time as a “foundation” for its civilization.
