She is best known for her self-portraits and politically relevant paintings, which were influenced by Mexican folk art. During her lifetime, she created over 200 paintings, drawings, and sketches related to her experiences in life, physical, and emotional pain, and her turbulent relationship with Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. She suffered from many medical ailments and passed away in 1954.
