He was most known for his avant-garde photography but considered himself first and foremost a painter. Associated with the Surrealist and Dadaist movements, his work has been shown at the MoMA New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Modern Art Museum of the City of Paris. He died in 1976.
