His early carer was spent in his family&#8217;s gospel quartet and with the act the Rainbows, which included Marvin Gaye and Billy Steward. Covay&#8217;s solo career began in 1957. His song &#8220;Pony Time&#8221; became a US #1 single, his single with the young Jimi Hendrix, &#8220;Mercy Mercy&#8221; established his blues-influenced style and &#8220;See Saw&#8221; skyrocketed him into the pop charts. His most recent album, Adlib, was released in 2000.</p>
