His early carer was spent in his family’s gospel quartet and with the act the Rainbows, which included Marvin Gaye and Billy Steward. Covay’s solo career began in 1957. His song “Pony Time” became a US #1 single, his single with the young Jimi Hendrix, “Mercy Mercy” established his blues-influenced style and “See Saw” skyrocketed him into the pop charts. His most recent album, Adlib, was released in 2000.
