In 1996, she received her BFA from Cooper Union, and went on to complete her MFA at Yale University.  Her work has been exhibited widely throughout galleries and museums in the US, including the Miami Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, and the Museum of Modern Art. Mutu is represented by Barbara Gladstone in New York, Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, and Victoria Miro Gallery in London.
