Joel Peter Witkin

Joel Peter Witkin is an American photographer born on September 13, 1939 in Brooklyn, New York. Witkin's work draws heavy influences from artists like Picasso, Balthus, Goya, Velasquez, and Miro.  In 2000, Witkins received an Ordre des Arts des Lettres by the French government and the Augustus Saint Gardens Medal from The Cooper Union School of Art in 1996.  Many of Witkin's photographs are a part of the permanent collections of the Bibliotheque Nationale and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France, as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
