At the age of eleven, he received his first camera and began to learn photography with the help of his sister’s nurse, Ninnie. He attended St. John’s College, Cambridge University during the 1920s but left without obtaining a degree. Beaton worked as an illustrator and photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines. He is also well known for his photographs of high-society, British Royalty, and Hollywood icons. After World War II, Beaton began working in theatre and film, designing costumes, sets, and lighting. He won Academy Awards for his costume design for Gigi and My Fair Lady. He also won four Tony Awards. In 1972, he was knighted, and he passed away in 1980.

It was written by Donald Albrecht, the Museum of the City of New York’s curator of architecture and design and published by Skira Rizzoli in October 2011.
