He focuses his work on portraiture and attempts to illuminate the darker sides of human nature and make the psychological space between the sitter, photographer, and audience his subject. He has photographed fellow artist Lucy McKenzie. Kern is also a regular contributor to Vice and Purple and has published 11 books. His work has been exhibited internationally and at MoMA and The Whitney.
