In the early 1930s, under the influence of new trendsin German photography, he introduced a new photographic aesthetic to Japan, that focused on the technical and aesthetic qualities of photography in its own right rather than as an derivative form of paintings. He published the photography magazine Koga (Light Pictures) with Nakayama Iwata and Kimura Ihei from 1932 to 1933. Although short-lived, it is now considered as one of the most important records of the New Photography school.
