He started to study drawing in 1773 and by early 1784 joined the studio of the famous Neoclassical artist Jacques-Louis David. Girodet won the Prix de Rome in 1789 for his Neoclassical painting “Joseph Recognized by His Brothers”. Girodet’s work became increasingly influenced by literature and romanticism in the 1790s, which can be observed in works like “Ossian Receiving the Ghosts of the French Heroes” and “The Entombment of Atala”. He continued working until his death on December 9, 1824. The Art Institute of Chicago held the first comprehensive retrospective of Girodet in early 2006.
