Tom Wesselmann
Tom Wesselmann was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on February 23, 1931. While in the army, he began drawing cartoons. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in psychology in 1956, he decided to pursue a career in cartooning and enrolled in the Art Academy of Cincinnati. After graduating, he moved to New York City and was accepted into the Cooper Union to study fine art, graduating in 1959. Wesselmann became a well-known Pop Artist of the 1960s, creating collages and assemblages, frequently of nudes, with everyday objects and advertising ephemera. During the 1970s he began exploring the use of shaped canvases; in the 1980s he began creating works of art in metal using laser cutting techniques. Wesselmann passed away in New York City in December 2004.
