Wilhelm von Gloeden

Wilhelm von Gloeden, born 1856, was a German photographer known for his pastoral nude studies. Based in Italy for the majority of his career, von Gloeden traveled throughout Italy photographing landscapes, monuments and residents. The villagers attitude to von Gloeden's open homosexuality was eased by his generosity and the royalties he paid his models. After his death in 1931, the Italian authorities destroyed an estimated three thousand glass plate negatives, which they considered pornographic. Only a few hundred images of his work remain.
