Matías Piñeiro

Matías Piñeiro makes lively and explosively energetic films set within enclosed spaces, houses and theater, where the boundaries between art and everyday life have fallen. His youthful characters, who work together on group aesthetic undertakings (like theatrical productions or the enactment of mysterious rituals and intrigues), intertwine and recoil and come together again in an endless relay of allegiances and betrayals, reconciliations and transformations.

Piñeiro was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in1982, and educated in that city’s Universidad del Cine. “The key for me,” Piñeiro has said of his unique approach to filmmaking, “is finding some rhythm of the film, not so much in the plot from a traditional sense but, rather, from its internal rhythm.” The three features and one short he has made between 2007 and the present have been likened to the early work of the French filmmaker Jacques Rivette, but the energy is vastly different. Each of his films has its own special pulse, force and bright spirit. He gives me hope for the future of cinema.
